The Reading Game ~ Review

Last week I received a copy of The Reading Game - 2nd Edition, and I have to tell you, I was pretty excited about it! I saw the game at the ED Expo 2015 in Atlanta, and I need to share the brilliance of this product with you. The Reading Game truly is a game that helps children develop confidence in reading.
Since this game is appropriate for working one on one with a beginning reader or a struggling reader (up to 4th grade), I knew it would be a fun product to show you.  Here's a short video that shows how The Reading Game works.

When my copy arrived, my son was thrilled. He wanted to play right away, and has asked repeatedly to continue playing. I have to tell you, this makes my Mommy heart happy!! (My Literacy Specialist heart, too!!)

Right away, I loved the simplicity of The Reading Game. The Reading Game is played with one adult and one learner. Use the enclosed high-frequency word cards to play memory match. Make sure to read each word aloud! After playing the first 2 memory match games (mastering 10 high-frequency words), you move to the captioned picture card.

The captioned picture cards only use the words mastered by that point, and help the learner experience a high level of success in reading the familiar words in sentence context. My son loved the picture cards, and you get a new one after every 10 words mastered!!
After you play all 6 memory match games in the color band, the learner has a reading vocabulary of 30 words. Guess what? These are the 30 words they need to experience success with the book on that color band.  The progression of the words is well thought out, and encourages a positive attitude towards reading by providing many opportunities for success. I also love that the books are well written!

All materials are color coded, which helps you easily keep the materials organized.  Red comes first, purple is last. Whether you tutor, homeschool, or need an easy to manage game for a volunteer to use with a struggling reader, The Reading Game is an excellent choice. On the website, they offer 8 free pre and post sight word assessments, in case you need to keep documentation of your work together! Click on the logo below to visit www.TheReadingGame.com!
