October is Fire Prevention Month and Fire Prevention Week is October 8 - 14. Teachers love to pull in topical resources, but they need to cover the standards, too. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is educators’ new go-to source for fire prevention resources geared towards elementary teachers and their students.
This is a paid, sponsored post in partnership with TypeTastic! All opinions are my own.

Keyboarding Skills

TypeTastic! is a free web-based game that helps teach young elementary students basic typing skills. They have taken a QWERTY keyboard and broken it up into 9 color-coded sections to help young learners remember where the letters are. When you check out their site, TypeTastic.com, you'll notice an area for teachers to sign up for ad-free experience for their class. So far, they have a selection of games teaching the QWERTY keyboard (Games 1-3), keyboard games (Games 4-6), and basic typing from the home row (Games 7-13). Additional lessons and games are being added as the site evolves, so I predict this will be a one-stop website for your keyboarding needs.
Here's a simple gift idea. Investment of time... fifteen minutes. Added bonus? You are about to clear off a shelf (or a box, a sterilite drawer, or whatever!)

If you are like me, you collect childrens' books for classroom libraries, etc. Some books may be well loved, or ones that you ordered from your book club catalogs, but forgot to use, or they weren't books that were checked out from your classroom library very often. This makes your shelved cluttered. Today's tip: Let them go... to the students! Here's how it usually goes down for me: set out an old box of books. Say nothing about it, until a sweetheart asks about them. Then tell them to pick one book they are interested in, and see you for a label for their name, because they can keep the book. Forever and ever.

Seriously, no Pinterest involved. Grab some old labels and hand-write a little note. These were mine last year! I had 3 5th graders tell me they read the books over and over during the summer. Love it!

Are you out of school? Did you Pinterest the end of the year, or was it as harried and hectic as mine was? Do you even give student gifts?
Hello Mrs Sykeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00451860908695617356noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6582327537836444417.post-79792645251953103452016-05-31T00:00:00.000-04:002017-03-27T23:27:22.377-04:00Speaking and Writing in Sentences - For Readers Who StruggleI notice many of my struggling readers in grades 3-5 have a language deficiency. Their teachers are beside themselves as they look at their writing, and come to me asking what do I do? Here's my answer: practice speaking in complete sentences.

I bring in photos from magazines or project an interesting picture, and ask students to describe what they see in complete sentences. A small group is a supportive environment for risk-taking, especially for your English Language Learners. I usually spend a couple of 20 minute small group lessons on describing the pictures using complete sentences. Model how to describe the pictures using complete sentences. If you expect elaboration and details from your students, be sure to model that as well. From there, move on to...

Practice Writing Sentences

Those pictures you've been practicing talking about? Use them again, and this time have them write their thoughts in sentences. Remind them about the format of a sentence - it needs a noun/verb, a capital letter, etc. They can write anything that they said yesterday, someone else said yesterday, or their new thinking about the picture.

We use the familiar pictures to make it easier to think of what to write about when they are struggling to write complete sentences. It makes a *huge* impact in helping students meet and sometimes exceed the writing expectations. The best way to become a better writer is to write, write, and write some more. If you spend time on this, I know you will see huge gains in your students who were struggling.
Field Trip to Peru

If your students are like mine, they haven’t seen much of the world outside their hometown. As a teacher, I am constantly on the lookout for opportunities to integrate the curriculum goals from my state in a meaningful way while opening the world to my students. One exciting (and free) opportunity to explore biodiversity of a coastal ecosystem is an upcoming virtual field trip to Peru! We know reading and writing are linked, right? Many of our struggling readers need help with writing, too. Unfortunately, time is tight, and mClass assessments require written response! Here's a quick look at strategies that I use with my struggling second, third, and fourth grade readers to boost their written responses.
It is a known condition that teachers have when they find an amazing pencil sharpener that works on every pencil, every time, without having to twist/turn the pencil in a strange way to get it to sharpen all sides of the pencil. Here's a look at my workhorse pencil sharpener (Photo from August, 2012 - read my first product review here.)
I can't say enough good things about this sharpener. It works just as well 3 years later. I replaced the blade last year after my kiddos accidentally used it for colored pencils - not recommended for color pencils or crayons, FYI!

Recently, the folks at Classroom Friendly Supplies announced that they have news. Big news. Purple. Yes, purple! It is called "Popular Purple." The company asked their social networks for input about the next color, and purple was so popular that it is called "Popular Purple!"

Check it out:
Hello Mrs Sykeshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00451860908695617356noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6582327537836444417.post-64956664382375514862015-09-12T07:30:00.000-04:002015-09-12T07:30:00.714-04:00Teacher Friendly Flash Drives and GiveawayI don't know about you, but I geek out pretty hard with my supplies. I can even go a bit overboard... My pencil sharpener is guarded fiercely from colored pencils because it sharpens perfectly, every time. My post-its are color-coded for strategy practice, so please put them back. If you leave the cap off a dry-erase marker, you will get the business end of a hissy fit. And for the love of Maude, take special care of the markers in this box:

That's why I'm super excited to show you this new little doodad that helps me so much: a paper clip style flash drive. If my internet speed is taking a long time to buffer videos in my classroom, I've got an easy way to access the video, even if it's not on my computer. Great for carrying your lesson planning home, too. I got my paper clip flash drive from www.usbmemorydirect.com. They have a ton of really cool designs to pick from. (See their best-sellers at this link)

I had mine in my binder at a meeting today, and the teachers at my table thought it was so cool! It seriously is the size of a paperclip.

I'm so thankful for the opportunity you give me to share my love for literacy with the world through this little corner of the blogosphere. As a small token of this appreciation, I'm giving some away! I'll pick ten winners, who will each receive a flash drive via snail mail from me. I'll also include my newest resource in my TPT store, at ShopMrsSykes.com, so you can Create Your Own Cootie Catchers!
